100% suburban. Many of the communities in the district that border Lake Minnetonka began as resort towns for the Twin Cities' affluent in the mid to late 1800s. Hotels, resorts, amusement parks and streetcar lines were built to accommodate tourists. Lake Minnetonka's "golden age" ended with the financial crash of 1893, the advent of cars, and World War I. Minnetonka is not the exclusive lakeside suburb many people think it is. Only a small portion of the city's 28 square miles actually borders the lake, and residents note that more important geographical features are Minnehaha Creek and the significant wetlands adjacent to it. Minnetonka is about 95 percent developed. Excelsior has a bustling, pedestrian-friendly downtown. Deephaven's biggest housing boom occurred before 1939. Many of its houses have gabled roofs, cedar-shake siding and fieldstone foundations. Orono has been, and continues to be, home to a number of prominent Twin Cities business families. Politically, the GOP has long held a commanding presence.
