90% suburban and 10% rural. Rosemount is a city located 15 miles south of the Twin Cities and is known for its strong Irish history and traditions - in fact, the Rosemount High School mascot is "the Irish." In January 1971, the village and township of Rosemount merged to become the City of Rosemount. During World War II, the federal government acquired 13,000 acres of farmland in Rosemount, displacing 90 families to construct the Gopher Ordnance Works - a munitions plant that was never fully functioning by the end of the war. At that time, 8,000 acres of the land were transferred to the University of Minnesota. Currently, the University of Minnesota's Agricultural Research Station and the Dakota County Technical College are located on this site. While most residents commute to the Twin Cities, the eastern one-third of Rosemount has heavy industrial employers. Rosemount has a fast-growing commercial area along County Road 42 and a nearly full industrial park. The district is solidly Republican.
