The Metropolitan Council predicted that by 2020, Andover will be one of the top 10 gainers in terms of growth in the number of households. The district, an open seat created by reapportionment, is a mix of suburban, exurban and rural areas. Inexorably, though, it is becoming more suburban as the metro area expands. Ham Lake named because of it's shape is located in the city. The district still contains a few farms, but single-family housing is the norm. Many of the homes sit on multi-acre lots. There is a small number of rental housing units. Much of the residential workforce commutes, traveling to jobs in the Twin Cities or in St. Cloud. Those commutes translate into concerns about transportation and congestion. Once considered DFL country, the district has become comfortably Republican in recent years.
