Boy, talk about a wrong number (over and over again) ...
You know how sometimes, events just juxtapose themselves so neatly, it's almost impossible to believe?
Sure you do. So here's what happened.
I've spent the week working on stories about FLS Connect, the St. Paul-based telemarketing company owned by Jeff Larson, and its latest "robocall" campaign on behalf of the Republican National Committee and presidential nominee John McCain.
I was literally just finishing up the latest story this afternoon when my husband, Kip Sundquist, told me that we'd just gotten one of those robocalls at home (which, incidentally, are illegal in Minnesota; if you're working for a telemarketing company that uses robocalls, you're supposed to read the script to the person you're calling). He saved the message. This is it:
"Hello, I'm calling for John McCain and the RNC because Democrats are dangerous and weak on crime. Barack Obama voted against tougher penalties for street gangs, drug-related crime and protecting children from danger. Barack Obama and his liberal allies (unintelligible, even after listening a dozen times) history of common criminals, and we can't trust their judgment to keep our families safe. This call was paid for by the RNC and McCain-Palin 2008, (866) 558-5591."
Kip said he'd heard the message before. Turns out, according to our Comcast call log, we're popular with this particular telemarketing company (and no, I'm not saying it's FLS Connect, but there's a good chance it is): It was our eighth call from that number, (866) 558-2875, just this month. (Update: Larson e-mailed Wednesday evening and said this: "We did not do ANY anti-Obama robocalls; we did some live calls in Minnesota but no other anti-Obama calls anywhere else.")
Kip answered one of them a week ago. When he tried to interrupt the caller, she just barreled right along, indicating that it was also a robocall. And he insists that it's exactly the same voice with the same message and intonation that he heard last week.
How about you? Are you also popular with these folks, too? Have you gotten the same recorded message? Let me know.
